"It is a strange paradox that out of the collective can emerge a singular intent of direction that is against each individual constituent will. Emergent behavior like a shadowy behemoth, takes its dim form at the peripheries of our consciousness, even as its winding intricacies form an inescapable center. This paradox is at the heart of the Anthropocene. The leviathan of human progress carries us onward to an uncertain light, and we are the helpless links of its great sinews."

After several months off-grid traveling in Alaska, I’m back in Portland, and pleased to be part of the exhibition “The Experience of Being” at Soliloquy Fine Arts.

Normally I work on anywhere between 2 - 5 painting

Normally I work on anywhere between 2 - 5 paintings concurrently, balancing drying times with creative moods and whims of spirit. Over the last two months however this one has consumed my time almost exclusively. I frequently dream of it as well. While still very much a work in progress, its title is tentatively "The Becoming of the Future."

Traveling through the German Alps last summer, we

Traveling through the German Alps last summer, we were fortunate enough to be welcomed into the home of renowned German photographer Verena von Gagern-Steidle. Nestled into the foothills of the lower alps, the rustic farmstead provided a refuge for visiting artists and writers escaping modernity.

Illuminated in golden light, the tall grasses of late-summer that surrounded the farmstead lent an unmistakable aura of timelessness to the old wood buildings. In respect to this mystical feeling, the grass was spoken about in solemn and reverential tones by Verena and her niece. And regretfully as well; that the tall grass must be cut.

Towards the end of our stay, machines came to make hay. A necessity of farm life, for three days the serenity of the place was punctuated by the roar of tractors. This piece “ The Cutting of the Long Grass,” was painted en plein air during that time.

This year a plan was announced by the regional government for Verena’s land. In response to the war in Ukraine, and German dependance on foreign oil, local power production across the country was being developed. As a necessity of the local geography, a series of transmission lines will be placed through the farm.

Radiant and transformative, fire consumes matter to produce light. In the same way, our lives might be regarded as a process to create something greater than our bodies. Like other forms of life we are pulled and pushed by pleasure and pain. Unlike other life, we are capable of transcending those experiences, our bodies raw material for the emergence of spirit. The ineffable experiences of which, when had, prove themselves greater, and out of suffering may create the brightest flame.

As part of the “Inside / Broadsides” at Blackf

As part of the “Inside / Broadsides” at Blackfish and the Portland Eckphraestival, I collaborated with artist Valerie Mirra on three plein air pieces. Painted on-site in and near Big Sur, these broadsides incorporate the poetry by Robinson Jeffers with the coastal landscape where he spent his life.

Come by Blackfish tonight at 7 PM to see the show, and enjoy live poetry readings by myself and the other amazing artists.

Details from progress on an unfinished piece from a few years ago. I've recently returned to finally complete it. It feels strange to be emersed in an earlier style, like stepping into an earlier self. However, it also allows me to pull out elements that can be freshly incorporated into my current practice, like returning flowers in Spring.

The completed version of "Leviathan" will be shown at Blackfish in May.

Tonight is the last night of the Portland Winter Light Festival! Don’t miss your last chance to see my installations @eastcreativepdx and @blackfish_gallery .

Much like the tangled nets they are made from, all three installations are interlinked by common themes and materials. I will be at my studio at East Creative for the duration of the event to talk about the installations, and share a selection of new work.

“Brightly shining from within, the installation imagines the tangible reality of ocean pollution as the dream landscape of our civilization. Gently breathing, the assemblage is both the physical and psychological flotsam of our interconnectedness. Swimming in endless waves of plastic particulate and glowing trash, viewers are invited to be caught in a liminal brightness dredged from the deep.”
